Transitional Viking-to-Norman Arming Sword

A functional single-hand arming sword modelled on the blades that appeared as the Viking sword gave way to the knightly swords of Norman Europe. This transitional Viking-to-Norman Arming Sword pairs a slender, deeply fullered Oakeshott Type XI blade with a matching Wheeler Type IX hilt styling popular among medieval Normans and Crusaders.

Stainless steel fittings bring stable structural performance for long-term display and use. The general form carried across northern Europe through the 11th and 12th centuries. It ships sharp, with a matching scabbard and a leather suspension rig.

This is a historically inspired design rather than a copy of one museum piece. AzureForge combines recognised period features into a single sword built for collectors, display, reenactment, and cutting practice by experienced adults.

Transitional Viking-to-Norman Arming Sword Blade

AzureForge forges the blade from 65Mn spring steel, oil quenched and then tempered so it holds an edge without turning brittle. A long central fuller runs most of its length, which keeps the weight down and moves the balance back toward the hand. At 79.5 cm it sits in the comfortable range for a one-handed cutter, and the profile tapers steadily to the point.

Hilt and fittings

A wide cruciform crossguard and a solid disc pommel frame the grip, both forms that show up on surviving Norman and early Crusader swords. We classify the hilt as a Wheeler Type IX configuration with an Oakeshott Type I pommel. The grip is wrapped in genuine top-grain cowhide over a seamless core and finished with a textured surface so it stays put in the hand.

Scabbard

The sword comes with a matching scabbard covered in embossed superfibre with a leather-grain finish. A genuine cowhide suspension system with brass fittings lets you hang it for wear or display.

The Blade Truth Standard

We tell you what a sword is and what it is not, so you buy the right one.

Steel Truth. 65Mn spring steel, oil quenched and tempered. A sharp monosteel cutter.

Build Truth. Slender Type XI blade with a full-length fuller, cruciform guard, disc pommel, and a cowhide-wrapped grip. The balance sits about 15.5 cm ahead of the guard, which gives it a lively, point-light feel for a sword of this size.

Use Truth. Made for target cutting on soft media such as tatami, water bottles, and light mats, plus static display and reenactment kit. It handles like a real arming sword because it is one.

Limit Truth. The edge is sharp, so treat it as an adult tool and keep it away from children. It will not survive edge-to-edge sparring or steel-on-steel bouting, which chips any sharp cutter. We do not call it “battle-ready.” That phrase tells you nothing about what a sword can actually do; the Blade Truth Standard points above do.

Care

Wipe the blade down and give it a light coat of oil after handling, then store it somewhere dry. Keep the edge away from hard surfaces and other metal. Scabbard fit can shift a little as humidity changes through the year, which is normal for a leather-and-fibre rig.

Questions buyers ask

Is it sharp? Yes. It ships as a functional sharp sword.

What period is it based on? The late 11th and early 12th centuries, the stretch where late Viking swords turned into medieval knightly arming swords.

What is the blade steel? 65Mn spring steel, oil quenched and tempered.

Does it come with a scabbard? Yes, with a genuine leather suspension system.

Can I spar with it? No. Use it for cutting soft targets and for display. Edge-to-edge contact will chip any sharp cutter.
